“Turkey neck” is not a pretty name, but it perfectly describes that annoying skin sag some of us get between our chin and neck. Aging, genetics and weight changes are often to blame. And since there’s no magic workout to target this stubborn area, surgery was pretty much our only option. Until now. Meet Kybella, a double-chin eraser that comes in a syringe.
This FDA-approved treatment dissolves “submental fullness” (a.k.a. under-chin fat) through a series of small injections. A great alternative to invasive liposuction and neck lift procedures, Kybella offers fabulous results with minimal downtime and no scaring.
The quick and easy procedure—you’re in and out in about 15 minutes—is similar to Botox, with smaller, more dispersed injections. But while Botox results can be seen in about 4 days and only lasts a few months, Kybella results are fully noticeable after 2 months and last for years, making touchups virtually unnecessary.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella, created by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, is the fancy name for ATX-101, a patented, FDA-approved synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. This fat-absorbing substance is found naturally in our bodies. When it’s injected into fat cells, it permanently destroys them and the body metabolizes their contents. Bye-bye double chin!
How will I feel during and after the Kybella treatment?
Most people experience little to no pain from the needle and will have minimal swelling and bruising afterwards. Ice and compression are recommended to help with any discomfort. Some patients say an eyebrow wax is far worse!
What kind of results can I expect?
Kybella works gradually since your body needs time to metabolize the destroyed fat cells. Most patients begin to see results as early as two weeks from their treatment, and they continue to improve over the next few months. For some, one treatment is sufficient, while others may need more depending on the amount of fat they want to remove.
Am I a candidate for the Kybella treatment?
If you’re over the age of 18 and your double chin is getting you down, you are most likely a candidate for Kybella. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet will greatly support the success of your treatment.
