What 
is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is an FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment that permanently removes fat in the chin and neck (the submental region). It contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. In synthetic form, injecting deoxycholic acid into an area where there is excessive fat allows KYBELLA® to destroy the fat cells permanently. Once fat cells are targeted with KYBELLA®, they will no longer expand, store fat, or accumulate because they will no longer live in the treated area.
Since fat tends to accumulate in the chin and neck area, especially with age, this part of the face and body is often resistant to diet and exercise. Fat also tends to build up in the submental area, and it can cause the face to appear heavier and older than it actually is.

How Does KYBELLA® Work?
KYBELLA® relies on deoxycholic acid, a bile acid, to permanently dissolve unwanted fat under the chin and along the neck. The naturally occurring molecule, already found in the body, breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. However, when deoxycholic acid is injected into the area under the chin, it destroys the existing fat cells for a reduction in fullness in the chin and accompanying neck region.
Once the fat in the submental area is targeted and destroyed, it will not return. However, most patients require a series of injection sessions to reach their goals fully.
During each injection session, a tiny syringe is used to inject several injections directly into the area under the chin to help you achieve a more desirable profile. Each treatment should be spaced at least one month apart, and the maximum number of treatments should never exceed six.

The Treatment Process
KYBELLA® is a quick and easy injection treatment. After a consultation to determine you are a suitable candidate for KYBELLA®, some numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area. However, many patients choose to bypass using it. Next, the KYBELLA® solution is injected into the area under the chin. A series of individual injections can be used, or one specialized syringe with several injection points can deliver KYBELLA® under the skin.
Immediately after the injections, the skin will become red, swollen, and puffy. It’s important to apply ice packs and arnica ointment right after the treatment to minimize swelling and the potential for bruising. You can resume your normal activities after the injections, but the swelling and some numbness will persist for about three to seven days.
Most patients need two to four injection sessions, but that number largely depends on your skin’s elasticity and the amount of fat in the area. As a byproduct of the fat elimination, the skin may contract slightly over time, causing a slight tightening effect.

After a treatment, you should notice a more sculpted jawline and chin area. The results of your KYBELLA® treatment may continue to improve over the next six months. Some patients also notice a slight skin-tightening effect after completing a full round of KYBELLA® injections.
If I gain weight after KYBELLA®, will my double chin come back?
The nice thing about KYBELLA® is that the treated area won't be affected even if you gain weight. Touch-up treatments are also an option if you feel like the area needs a little fine-tuning.
Is there any downtime with KYBELLA®?
There is no significant downtime after the injections, but you'll want to plan accordingly, just like with any other cosmetic treatment. Swelling, tenderness, redness, and bruising in the treated areas are common.
How long do the results last?
KYBELLA® is a permanent way to get rid of unwanted fat in the chin area. Once the fat cells are destroyed and removed from the body, they will not return. However, if you are not diligent about your diet, any remaining fat cells can swell over time, leading to a heavier-looking submental area.
