is miraDry®?
Hyperhidrosis, a.k.a. excessive sweat, is an embarrassing and often uncontrollable condition because naturally overactive sweat glands generally produce more sweat than necessary. miraDry® is a permanent, nonsurgical treatment for improving excessive underarm sweat. It relies on thermal energy to target and destroy the sweat glands, odor glands, and hair follicles in the underarms in one to two treatment sessions. The Treatment Process
We recommend scheduling a consultation first to ensure you are a good candidate for miraDry®. You’ll need to arrive at your appointment without any deodorant or antiperspirant and freshly shaven underarms (do it a day or two before your treatment is scheduled) with a tiny amount of hair growth to identify the area to be treated. Wear clothes with loose arm holes for easy access to the treatment site.
Once you have decided on the treatment, which is customized for each underarm, the area is numbed with local anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort. A temporary tattoo is used to mark the skin in preparation for treatment. Next, the miraDry® handpiece is applied to the underarms to deliver electromagnetic energy to the sweat glands. The procedure generally lasts about one hour.
After miraDry®, you can safely return to your normal activities. It is crucial to immediately ice the treated area and use non-prescription anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling. You’ll also want to keep the underarms clean and use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Avoid shaving or applying antiperspirant or deodorant for the next few days. After a few days, you can resume exercising. It’s normal to have some swelling and soreness in the underarm area, which typically subsides within a few weeks.
